Background:
The media holds a position of great influence in our society. Television, newspapers and radio all vie for our attention … and so often the stories being told are stories of desperate situations around the world, each one apparently worthy of our consideration only until the next catastrophe erupts.

In the midst of all this God is at work. In communities worldwide people are coming to experience the transforming power of His love, often through others who compassionately serve their needs in an effort to see goodness spread. Youth With A Mission is in a unique position to positively influence people all around the world, and to hear the stories of how God is at work even in the most dire of circumstances.

By telling these stories we become part of God’s redemptive work; we declare His glory as it shines forth even in places of darkness. Hope rises up as people hear such stories. For some it is hope that their lives, too, can be renewed; for others, that they can become part of seeing transformation by getting involved through prayer or action; still others will be encouraged to give financially to God’s work because they have hope that real change can take place.

Project:
AfriCom is the Communication Team for YWAM projects all over Africa. We will be hosting a School of Field Journalism in Muizenberg, South Africa, starting in January 2009.

Each week we will tackle a practical subject, such as writing skills, investigative journalism, photography, television and radio. In addition we will spend time developing our understanding of African history, the role of journalism in missions and what it means to have a biblical worldview.

The 12 weeks of lectures will be followed by a 2 month Field Assignment in East Africa, which will be an opportunity to put newly acquired skills and knowledge into action.

Primary Objectives:
Our goal is to impart to students a passion for God-centered journalism and to equip them with skills to be effective in this arena. Not only do we desire to graduate students with the ability to tell stories from God’s perspective, but we trust that they will develop a deeper appreciation for the part these stories can play in the effectiveness of missions worldwide.

It is our hope that a number of graduates will return to other parts of Africa to become involved in our communication strategy for YWAM across the continent.
